TOUTANT AND REID SHARE TITLE OF STAIRMASTER 2009

August 27th, 2009 by admin

Before Swatch TTR ranking points are handed out in tomorrow’s slopestyle competition at the 4Star Stylewars in Falls Creek, Australia, riders competed in a separate rail event today. Again, we saw the two Canadians Charled Reid and Seb Toots battling for the top spot. This time both went home with the win.

Thursday, 27 August 2009: Spectators were entertained earlier this evening with an array of performances from Stylewars riders throwing down their best performances in a stair rail set-up consisting of 28 steps, located outside the Frying Pan Restaurant and Bar.

One of the most exciting nights of the five-day-long snowboarding festival, this rail event in the heart of the Village Bowl at Falls Creek was cranking with a large crowd psyched to watch and dance to pumping tunes supplied on site by DJ Perplex.

The Stylewars rail event is an individually judged component of the competition, which offers a separate cash purse of $5000 for the Stair Master.

After a mind-blowing display of tricks including every single variation possible of a gap-to-270 down the kink rail, first place was just too difficult to score.

Former 2008 Stair Master Charles Reid and Sebastien Toutant (both from Quebec) were riding as though “they were battling for their lives” and in the end, it was both riders who claimed the title of Stylewars Stair Master, sharing the prize money between them.

Mel Simmons was the head judge and said, “This was probably the hardest judging I have ever done, ever.  And I have done a lot of contests.”

Simmons has eight years experience in judging and has been traveling internationally judging on the TTR World Snowboard Tour for four years.

“I can quite easily say that it was some of the toughest head-to-head judging that I have ever had to session.

“I would have preferred to nail it down to three hits (in a battle-style format) but unfortunately due to time constraints, it just wasn’t going to happen.

“The riding was just so outstanding it was ridiculous.  It was just too damn tight to call, Charles and Seb had absolutely everything on lock.  And at the end of the day, we just can’t let one of them walk away with the title.

“It was a unanimous decision between the judges and event organisers, and we are happy with the outcome.”

In addition to top prize, $1500 was awarded to Best Trick, rightfully earned by Mark Sollars (USA) with a flawless frontside 450 to boardslide gapped over the kink rail.

Sollars was ecstatic, “It’s so much fun.  It’s the most legit down rail in a contest I have ever ridden.  It’s so long so you have to lock on to your trick all the way down.”

Six riders out of thirty made it to the final, and the other three selected for the challenge were Eric Willett (USA) and Aussie boys Keiran McLaughlin and Tom Pelley who impressed the crowds up against International talent.

Riders were loving the size of the set up and the length of the rails were all the talk on the night.  Reid was all smiles, saying, “It’s great, it’s big!”

Australian rider Darragh Walsh was amazed at the level of talent shown at the Stylewars Rail Jam.  He said: “Watching the Internationals ride was crazy.  It was a bit intimidating, but it was awesome because it pushed everyone to ride their hardest and do more tricks.”

WORLD’S BEST RIDERS FLY IN FOR SNOSHO’DOWN

August 27th, 2009 by admin
» » » » » »

With just over a week to go till Australia’s premier snowboarding event kicks off in Perisher, snow goers are being urged to organise their trip now as thousands of spectators are anticipated to converge on Front Valley for the fifth consecutive Boost Mobile SnoSho presented by LG.

Free for spectators, the Boost Mobile SnoSho is taking place on Friday 28th & Saturday 29th August and will see some of the world’s best riders pull off world-class big air tricks and try out the 100m world’s longest rail for the chance to win up to $30,000 in cash and prizes. There’s even a chance for two ‘Wild Cards’ to compete against the pros!

Just confirmed to compete in this year’s Boost Mobile SnoSho is international snowboarding sensation, Danny Kass from USA - one of the most awarded snowboarders of all time with seven Winter X Games medals, five US Open Championships, and two Olympic silver medals.  Danny will be a major draw card at the competition along with 22 other invited riders including Charles Reid (Canada), Sebastien Toutant (Canada), Mark Sollors (Canada), Marko Grilc (Canada), Jacob Koia (NZ) and Australians’ Scotty James, Ryan Tiene, Mikey Williams, Boost Mobile Team Rider Jye Kearney, and more.

As one of only two Swatch TTR World Snowboard Tour endorsed snowboarding comps in Australia, the Boost Mobile SnoSho kicks off on Friday 28th August at 2.00pm with the Wild Card event as eager snowboarders battle it out for one of two wild card positions and the chance to mix it up with the pros in the main event on Saturday evening.  Featuring the 100m World’s Longest Rail and a 45-minute Jam Session – including a huge acid drop into the big air – riders are allowed to push their skills to the limit without worrying about specific tricks as the judging is based on the Internationals Judges Commission – Overall Impression (OI) standard. The event is open to any experienced rider and is free to enter. Register online at www.boostsnosho.com.au/wild_card

From 6pm on Saturday 29th August, the Boost Mobile SnoSho will heat up as the temp drops with the two wild cards and 23 national and international pros going head-to-head in a unique night time competition. The World’s Longest Rail contest will see the rider with the longest successful slide crowned ‘King of the Rail’ and win $5,000 prize money. Then it’s time for the SnoSho Jam Session – a free-for–all format with each rider endeavoring to land the most technical tricks in an attempt to impress the judges.

The highlight of the weekend is without a doubt the gameshow style Final in which the six top scoring riders perform tricks randomly selected from a spinning gameshow wheel. With each successful trick the judges award a letter and the first rider to complete five tricks and spell the word B-O-O-S-T takes out the Boost Mobile SnoSho Winners title and the $15,000 winner-takes-all cash. This unique format always provides a dramatic conclusion to one of Australia’s biggest snowboarding events.

Facts about what goes into building the Boost Mobile SnoSho presented by LG:

  • 32 tonnes of scaffolding – if each scaffold tower was placed on top of each other it would be 186 metres tall - the same as a 7 storey building!
  • A 60 ft big air jump
  • The world’s longest rail - a 75mm wide box rail that extends 100m and weighs 8.7 tonnes, taking five guys two whole days to install!
