Roope Tonteri wins the summer rookie fest 2009

Although summer has arrived in Europe, the Black Yeti didn’t stop and moved to Val Senales for the Summer Rookie Fest - the only Swatch TTR summer event scheduled in the Alps. The rookie champion Roope Tonteri won after a thrilling head to head final  in the slopestyle contest with new Czech talent Darek “True Crail” Bergmann. The competition was initially scheduled on a 1Star level, but was elevated to 2Star TTR after the display of rotations up to bs1260 in the qualifiers in the amazing Gentlemen Riders Snowpark.

Among the groms, the South Tyrolean talent Markino Grigis proved to be the best with a frontside 1080 on the big kicker. As for the eight competing girls, all of them from the Czech Republic, the best one was the young Diana Augustinova, protagonists of the contest.

The Snowpark set up, built by the Gentlemen’s Riders crew, included a first table top with two jumps of  8 and 12m and a butterbox, a second table top with jumps of 14 and 18m and a 12-meter down rail. The riding level of the contestants from Italy, Austria, Finland and the Czech Republic were very high, but this event was not just about competitiveness. The program also featured skateboard sessions,  video shootings with the pro RedBull who were invited as coaches: Filippo Kratter, Roman Dlauhy and Sarka Pancochova.

As for the contest, the format scheduled a day of training, one of qualifiers and one for the finals, everything in the jam session format. During the competition we saw cab900, cab1080, fs1080 and fs1260. In the finals, the sky-high level of the two final contenders Roope Tonteri and Darek Bergmann brought to an extra final run for a direct play-off where the Finnish won with the fs1260. Unbelievable level.

As in the tradition of the rookie fests, the prizes did not consist of money, but offered the competitors something more valuable for the career of young rookies: photo and video shootings with Entry Magazine and Board.TV, invitations to bigger events and surf camps offered by Protest.

This was the closing event of a season of rookie events all over the world, and the international stops of the next season have already been announced:

Rome SDS and TWS Team Shootout Teaser “A Hard Day’s Night”

Juli 24th, 2009 by admin
» » » » » » »

This past April, the Rome SDS was one of four brands selected to participate in the first annual Transworld Team Shoot Out. It was a week-long, resort-bound contest to make a short video and shoot photos. Rome teamed up with Big Bear Mountain and brought in Bjorn Leines, LNP, Marie-France Roy, Eiki Helgason, and Will Lavigne to do the shredding. Over the course of a week, the crew spent seven days, or more accurately seven nights, filming a short shred flick called “A Hard Days Night”. The film will be released exclusively through iTunes on July 27th 2009, in a package with the three other videos in the contest.

The Team Shoot Out was a “contest” of progression and creativity, through film, photography, and feature construction. Transworld Snowboarding invited four teams, paired them up with four separate mountains and gave each team seven days to build and seven days to shred and shoot. Each team had five riders, two filmers and one photographer. Once the brands submitted their films in early June, Transworld got together a panel of people they trust to pick the winner based on the creativity of the video and the photos.

You can get a sneak peak of the teaser for the Rome film now by clicking here nd be sure to check back on July 27th to download the entire movie from iTunes.

Twitter contest for NRc bindings

Juli 24th, 2009 by admin

On Monday we announced that we’d give NRc bindings to the first person who showed up at a certain address in Seattle. They had to wear a beanie on so we could spot them and say the password “ass cobra” to our Intern Zach. The next day we announced the address on Twitter and said, “find Zach the Intern there at 2pm”. It was 80 degrees, so we knew if they had beanies on they were there to win.

So we showed up not knowing if anyone would be there. Zach and I were hiding in an alley looking down on the Pike Place intersection, we saw a few beanies down there! Hey it worked! Then out of the blue, we hear “ass cobra” WTF? Zach was spotted. Since we weren’t to the intersection yet, it didn’t count. So we reset and proceeded to sneak through the market to the intersection. We didn’t want to be spotted until we got to the middle of the busy intersection.

Bam, soon as Zach got out of the market near the intersection he got found by about 5 beanie guys and one gal. It was a kind of a tie so there had to be a tie-breaker to give away the bindings. Naturally we had 2 rounds of handstand contests to settle it. Thanks to all who came out.
