TransAM Finals at Bear Mountain

Love this video and song

In weather that made me feel like I should have dressed in a Hawaiian shirt, short shorts, and mandals, I watched one hundred and two rippers make history. These kids of various ages, sizes, and riding styles had no idea they were making history, but just like any other day they were riding their hearts out. The incredible stage that was set by Clayton Shoemaker and the Bear Mountain Park Crew was something to behold and was a perfect catalyst for a break out performance in the TransWorld SNOWboarding TransAm. The TransAm Park at Bear always just appears overnight and is one of the first things anyone sees as they come up the steps in awe Saturday morning at Bear. It had everything and pushed each rider to step out of their normal riding and open up for creativity on a set up they could have never even imagined riding.

It was already a pivotal moment in the tour as it was the last stop of a train that started down the tracks, on the East coast, in January and only picked up steam as it crossed the nation. As the riders stood at the top of the park anxiously awaiting the introduction and start of the Traffic Jam, there was a strange feeling in the air. Some guessed based on the park that this would be something that would be talked about for some time to come. Others were wondering what these riders would do on such a different park set up. Any speculation was put to rest as all one hundred and two riders tore the park apart feature by feature. The Traffic Jam, an hour long jam session, gives each rider so much riding time that they can’t help but progress their riding to new heights. The Dakine Paper Shreds had front row seats to the action on the Dakine flat box to down rail set up. I am actually surprised they were still standing after the amount of heat produced by the likes of Devin Allen who was as consistent as the sunshine and warm weather at Bear. Ian Sams was also signing his name into the TransAm history book as he hit almost every feature in one trick and was just awesome over the Bear Mountain 4×4 Blazer buried in the ground. This feature also showcased something that I have never witnessed before. As one rider was stalling on the top of the blazer from the side another rider aired over the vehicle from the top jibbing the rider that was in mid stall. As both riders rode away unscathed they met at the bottom for a big hug and disbelief on what had actually transpired. It was something you would see on a most shocking moments TV show, a moment I needed a change of underwear to experience. The whole bottom of the course was a row of features set up in a skate park style line up with transition of both sides. This gave riders the option to combine tricks on several features in a row. Rainbow Woodall and Elin Bjorkum were combining one of the wall rides into the Oakley Shark lift pole set up that was forcing riders to hit the transition on the backside of the park or ollie to another wall ride at the end of the Oakley Shark pole. It was a matter of timing and fast feet to survive, one man who didn’t quite survive the shark wrath was a rider named Donkey who was awarded best fall for a backside spine contortion. Moving down the bottom row was the Zumiez Couch that had riders stalling and bonking into the transition on the other side. The High Cascade Snowboard Camp Marshmallow also saw riders flying well overhead with 360’s, 540’s, and inverts galore. The next feature down the line was a huge water tank that could be hit from the side or over top. Alex Hulett quickly pioneered what most could only name as a stall trick for lack of a better name and the inexperience of ever seeing something like it before.

Forty riders were picked to ride in the Ultimate Final, which was set up to isolate riders to certain lines of the park for a ten minute jam in each section. Melissa Spillman stepped ahead of the pack as a combo master and overall best female rider in each section. Ryan Tarbell had his eye on each line of the park and was riding like the TransAm scene had been up all season long. He was gaining speed from one side of the park and using the Ride Slime wall as skate transition to stall up top then drop back in to hit the Bear Water Tank from the side. That innovative riding put him in the top spot to take home best overall male rider. Riders who took home top honors received Custom TransAm Goggles from Oakley, Custom TransAm Backpacks from Dakine, My Little Pony and Nerf guns from High Cascade Snowboard Camp and Zumiez gift cards. First place earned TransWorld SNOWboarding TransAm trophies, Dakine backpacks and board bags, Ride Snowboards, Oakley goggles, and Zumiez gift packs. In the end it was a Ball Park Franks hot dog roast and a huge product toss that had everyone jumping for the sky. It was a perfect award for the exclamation point on a history making tour unlike any other.

The Transworld Snowboarding TransAm Tour has evolved and will continue to evolve because of everyone involved. It is not a surprise that we end the tour at Bear where they consistently set the standard higher and higher and set the tone for what we can do on next year’s tour. History was made this past weekend and your originators were everyone involved especially the riders. Get ready for January 2010 when we write the next chapter of fun.

From 7th till 8th March the Jurassik Snowpark in Folgaria / Italy hosted the first ever Elan Chicas snowboard camp. Together with our international team riders Lisa Filzmoser, Conny Bleicher and Dominique Valleé and Chicitas riders Urška PribošiÄ and Matilda Pilfalk a team of enthusiastic girls were riding , being coached in the park and as well testing some of our new 2010/11 Chicas boards.
At the end of the camp obvious progress was visible in the riding of all attending girls, but even more important a big smile was to be seen on each girls face.

Ville Uotila takes second consecutive win at Total Fight

März 29th, 2009 by admin
» » » » » » » » »

The action was hot in one of the season’s last events on the Swatch TTR Tour - the 4Star Grandvalira Total Fight Masters of Freestyle. An impressive international line up ventured to Grandvalira in the Pyrenees to fight it out in this renowned Slopestyle event. Despite disruptive weather on the competition day, the riders still put on a great show. Ville Uotila (FIN) came through in the finals and took out his second consecutive Total Fight Title, moving him up to World No.23 and earning him 6000 Euros.  Second place went to Norwegian rookie Pål Sörensen, and Gerome Matthieu (FRA) finished third.

The format for the finals was a brutal head to head match up or “Total Fight”. Riders had to battle against each other, mano a mano, with the top qualifier taking on the last qualifier etc. The riders and event organizers decided to finish the finals early due to heavy snowfall which was slowing the course down and this meant that the winners were decided based on their riding in the second rounds.

Ville cruised through the first round with a switch BS 900, FS 540 and a huge switch BS 700. He then went on to meet his fellow countryman, Janne Lipsanen (FIN) who busted out a sweet BS 540 but bailed on his second jump trying a BS 900. Ville’s response to this was a huge switch BS 900, FS 540 and a gigantic switch BS 180, earning him top scores and sealing his second Total Fight victory.

“Seppe was sick so I got through the first round pretty easy. I had nothing to lose so I just went for it on my next run and it went pretty well. It’s pretty cool to get so many TTR points as it should bump me up in the rankings, I’m thinking now that maybe I should have gone to the US Open and I might have had a chance to beat my last year 13th position”, said the stoked Finn.

Second place went to 21years old Pål Sörensen (NOR) whose run in the second round included a sweet Cab 900 and FS 540 which moved him up to World No.52.  His result today, combined with his 4Star Arctic Open win and 7th place at the 6Star Oakley Arctic Challenge suggest he is one to watch in the future. “It was a bit scary with the wind and the snow as you could not know your speed but the park was cool.  I hadn’t imagined that they would have such a good park here in Andorra”, he said about today’s contest.

The Swatch TTR Tour is slowly winding down but there is still plenty of action to come.  This weekend the 3Star Showdown Over The City is going down in Vancouver, Canada and the women are fighting for the Title at the 6Star Roxy Chicken Jam in Mammoth, California, USA.  Log onto to www.ttrworldtour.com for fresh news, updates and videos

Kelly Clark gewinnt den Halfpipe Contest beim 6Star Roxy Chicken Jam

März 29th, 2009 by admin
» » » » » » » »

It was a perfect bluebird day at Mammoth Mountain, California, USA, with Kelly Clark (USA) pulling ahead of the rest of the pack to claim first place at the 6Star Roxy Chicken Jam Halfpipe competition. Her win confirmed her status as one of the world’s premiere women snowboarders and moved her into World No. 3, ready to make a move for the 08/09 Women’s Swatch TTR Champion Title.  Mercedes Nicoll (CAN) put down a smooth run to claim second place and Sarah Conrad (CAN) took the third spot on the podium.

Set at the main base area at Mammoth Mountain, the pipe had a nice shape and softened up in the sun allowing the ladies to put together some great runs throughout the day.  A field of 24 women dropped into the pipe for a morning semi-finals session that was narrowed down to 12 riders for finals in the afternoon.  The finals session was a jam format, so riders were hustling to put together some big progressive runs.  The Mammoth winds kicked up halfway through the finals giving the ladies a bit of an added challenge.

Kelly lived up to her reputation today as ‘Queen of the Halfpipe’ and took home her second consecutive Roxy Chicken Jam 6Star win.  This puts her in excellent position to go after her first Swatch TTR World Title in tomorrow’s Slopestyle competition.  “The title would be an amazing bonus to a really great season to me right now” said Kelly Clark setting her eyes on the prize.  “It would just be like icing on the cake.”   roxy_chicken_jam_winners.JPG

Kelly took full ownership of the pipe with her signature amplitude and smooth style.  Definitely going the largest of the day, Kelly put up a Frontside Air, Backside 540 Mute, Frontside 540, Method, Frontside 720 and a Cab 720 to claim the top spot on the podium.

The supportive crowd saw Mercedes Nicoll (CAN) giving it her all with a run that consisted of a Frontside Air, Backside 540, Frontside 720, Cab 360 and a Backside 720. And, Sarah Conrad (CAN) was able to lock in third place with a great run throwing down a Method, Frontside 540, Backside 540, Air-to-Fakie, Cab 540 and finished with a Switch Alley-Oop 540.

Kjersti Oestgaard Buaas (NOR), another favorite for the Tour Title, did not qualify for the halfpipe finals session and remains in the World No. 7 position.  Lisa Wiik (NOR) had a good day finishing in fifth place and will hold on to her World No. 2 spot.  It will be a battle on the slopestyle course tomorrow as Kelly and Kjersti duke it out for the Title and Cheryl Maas (NED) enters the race for a Top 3 finish.  Although Jamie Anderson will not be competing this weekend, she still has a chance to finish the season in the TTR Top 3 depending on the outcome tomorrow.

The Swatch TTR Ranking was significantly shaken up today as riders clamber to climb into the top 3.  Fat portions of the $200 000 USD prize purse and guaranteed invites to next season’s major events were acting as incentives for all the contenders to up the amplitude and stomp the unstompable.
